Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program Instilling a Lifelong Passion for MusicBuilding Character

Janet Napolitano AYS Alumna Janet Napolitano is President-elect Barack Obama's nominee for secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Currently serving as Governor of Arizona, Napolitano has experience in federal law enforcement and dealing with immigration issues on the front lines, which she will need to draw on in running the department created in response to the 9/11 terror attacks.

Regarding her time as a member of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony, Napolitano said "The many hours of practicing my clarinet was rewarded by earning a seat in this honor orchestra where both individual and group discipline became an important part of my high school years. I also have wonderful memories of playing under the direction of Dale Kempter and with so many friends working hard to produce beautiful music together. I believe that AYS helped to develop my leadership skills and my ability to work with others."
