The Youth Symphony is the premier orchestra of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program.
Each year this high school group goes on a concert tour out-of-state, with some years' tours being out of the country. The Youth Symphony has previously performed in England, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Austria, Spain, Mexico, Canada & the Czech Republic in addition to Arizona, Nevada, California, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Kansas, Maryland & New York and especially 26 communities in New Mexico. For the 2005-2006 season, the Youth Symphony toured and performed in Brazil. In 2007, the Youth Symphony gave a concerts in Tucson and Flagstaff, AZ. In 2008, the Youth Symphony toured the Chicago area, and gave two concerts. In 2009, the Youth Symphony travelled to Australia and performed in the Sydney Opera House In 2010, concerts were given on the tour to Colorado Springs and Denver. In 2011, the Youth Symphony traveled to Philadelphia. In 2012, the Youth Symphony went to Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic and gave concerts in the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Esterhazy Palace, in the Medieval village of Wels, and in Bad Fussing, Germany. In 2013, the Youth Symphony and AYO traveled together to Flagstaff, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada. In June of 2014, the Youth Symphony will travel to New York City and perform in Carnegie Hall.
Youth Symphony alumni perform all over the world in professional and amateur performing groups in addition to earning a living at many other professions. Notable Youth Symphony alumni include; Mike Judge (1980 Trombone) -actor/producer/writer (Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill), Janet Napolitano (1975 Clarinet)- Cabinet Secretary of Homeland Security, & Bobby Shew (1959 Trumpet) - Jazz Trumpeteer.
Past conductors of the Youth Symphony since its 1955 inception are; Kurt Frederick (deceased), Ted Rush, William Gabbert, Jane Aten, Jay Harris, James Bonnell, Dale Kempter, Amir Kats, and Gabriel Gordon.
The Youth Symphony usually rehearses from 6:30 to 9:15 on Monday nights at the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program Facility (4407 Menaul NE)
