In 1981 the Youth Symphony Program began assembling, selling, and delivering luminarias to the Albuquerque community in early December. Throughout its history, the project was limited to the students of the YS, with most of the revenue dedicated to offsetting the cost of YS tours.
Students of the YS folded luminaria bags during their annual summer retreat in August, YS families assembled and delivered luminarias at work houses across the city, and many in our community supported the program through their annual purchase of luminarias.
In addition to being an important fundraiser, many experienced the value of team building, volunteering, engaging with customers, and being ambassadors for the program through the Luminaria Tradition.
Starting this 2017-2018 season, the funds raised by this long-standing and valued AYSP tradition will financially benefit all the students in the program and will involve participation from all AYSP families.
Further details will be forthcoming, and parents will have the opportunity to ask questions during each ensemble’s scheduled parent meeting.
We rely on donations from generous individuals and businesses like you to provide symphonic performance experiences to Albuquerque’s talented young musicians and access to music education for students in need.
