September 14, 2019 Rehearsal Notes for JO

Parents: We continued with sectionals and the students worked very well
with the instructors. Some of the instructors may have assigned spots on
this music to prepare for next week.

Students: We received good reports from the sectional instructors. Please
work on any assigned passages they may have given to you to practice. If
you need extra help, Mr. Austell and Mrs. Robertson will in the rehearsal
room at 8:30 for extra help.

Strings: Please prepare the following for next week’s sectional. Work on
several measures at a time and do not go on until you can play them well!

  • “Ode to Joy” - Practice from #56 to the end of the piece. Cellos and Basses: Be sure you can play the “Recitative” by memory with the correct rhythm and bow placement. Continue to practice the bowing between m.19 – m.54. Take a down bow at the frog, lift your bow back to the balance point and set it firmly on the string, then take an up bow. After you have mastered this bowing, Go back and review from the beginning to 54.
  • “Magic Flute - Work on the bowing: down up down up down up DOWN \ up up down up down up DOWN \ up up down up down up DOWN : This bowing should be played with a good sounding spiccato at the BALANCE part of the bow!
  • “Sleigh Ride” – Practice this piece 4 measures at a time and for the correct bowing and rhythm.

Winds: Please prepare the following for next week’s sectional. Work on
several measures at a time and do not go on until you can play them well!

  • "Magic Flute" - Work on clear articualtions and clear distinctions between notes that are staccato, accented, and slurred. Woodwinds + Trombone should practice playing m.56-End with clear dynamic contrast between piano and Sf markings.
  • "Can Can" - Clear and shortly articulated eighth notes. Practice slowly the make sure each note is being played with the correct fingering. Practice playing m.37-End (2x only) and taking the second ending.
  • "Sleigh Ride" - Shortly articualted notes and triplet figures for the woodwinds at Letter E.

Looking forward to another great Saturday rehearsal!

Best,

Mrs. Robertson and Mr. Austell
