September 7, 2019 Rehearsal Notes for JO

Parents: We had our first sectional this week. In the sectional, each group
practiced spots in 4 pieces that we will play for our concert. During the
rehearsal, the expert instructors made suggestions to the students about
how and what to practice. Some of the instructors may have assigned
spots on this music to prepare for next week.

Students: Congratulations on reading through “Sleigh Ride”. Sight-reading
is often challenging and you all persisted and we were able to get through
the entire piece! This week please review what you did in sectionals. If
you have any questions, Mr. Austell and Mrs. Robertson will in the room at
8:30 for extra help.

Strings: Please prepare the following for next week’s sectional. Work on
several measures at a time and do not go on until you can play them well:

  • “Sleigh Ride”
    • Make sure your bow stroke in the beginning starts at the lower part of the bow with a quick bow stroke! In m.3 the two down bows stay at the frog, and the eighth notes are played off the string.
    • In m.6 – 8, emphasize thefirst beat! Same from A – B.
    • Letter B – First violins – the first beat gets 2 counts and the eighth notes for this measure should be played exactly on the third beat! The same rhythm occurs from B – D.
    • Everyone - prepare from the beginning to letter D. Just work on these measures (4 at a time) and bracket the measure that are repeated!
  • “Ode to Joy”
    • Practice the bowing between m.19 – m.54. Take a down bow at the frog, lift your bow back to the balance point and set it firmly on the string, then take an up bow. After you have mastered this bowing, Go back and review from the beginning to 54.
  • “Magic Flute”
    • Work on the bowing: down up down up down up DOWN \ up up down up down up DOWN \ up up down up down up DOWN : This bowing should be played with a good sounding spiccato at the BALANCE part of the bow!

Winds: Please prepare the following for next week’s sectional. Work on
several measures at a time and do not go on until you can play them well:

  • "Sleigh Ride"
    • Short articulations throughout and clear eighth notes for woodwinds from the Beginning to Letter B
    • Triplets at Letter E should be practiced slowly for clarity and then gradually increase tempo.
  • "Ode to Joy"
    • Woowinds should work on clear eighth notes at m.56-60. Practice slow and listen for each note before increasing tempo
  • "Magic Flute"
    • Woodwinds should practice consistent and correct rhythms in at m.25-39
    • Brass should practice playing agressive eighth notes with a "hammer-like" articulation

We are looking forward to another great rehearsal on Saturday!

Best,

Mrs. Robertson and Mr Austell
